Fungal infection of a plant leaf, animation. A fungal spore (reproductive cell, brown) that has been carried through the air attaches itself to the outer surface of the underside of the leaf (lower epidermis), next to a stoma (pore, yellow). A germ tube emerges from the spore and enters the leaf through the stoma. The germ tube grows upwards and several intercellular hyphae branch off and spread throughout the leaf. When the tip of a hypha contacts a host cell wall, it penetrates it. A haustorium (brown sphere) then grows and invades the cell, drawing in its nutrients. The fungus will continue to grow until the plant is killed. For an unlabelled version of this animation, see K004/0360. | |
