Proton pump and ATP synthesis. Animation showing how a protein gradient drives the formation of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) by the enzyme ATP synthase (right). A proton pump (purple) is a membrane protein that moves protons (red dots) across a membrane (white). The movement of a large number of protons into a space causes an electrical and pH gradient. The protons flow down this gradient, out of the space, through the ATP synthase. The protons provide the energy that ATP synthase needs to combine ADP (adenosine diphosphate) and inorganic phosphate to synthesise ATP. For a version without labels see K004/0320. | |
