Myasthenia gravis. Animation showing the action of a healthy nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (purple), followed by that of a patient with myasthenia gravis (MG). The receptor is in the postsynaptic membrane of a neuromuscular junction. Binding of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (green) opens the ion channel in the membrane, allowing sodium ions into the cell. This passes the signal from the nerve to the muscle. MG is an autoimmune disease. Antibodies (orange) are made which bind to the receptor and prevent the signal being passed to the muscle cell. the MG is an autoimmune disease that causes fluctuating muscle weakness and fatigue. This results in muscle weakness, which fluctuates with activity and rest. For a version without labels see K004/0311.
