Insertion of an intra-uterine device (IUD), animation. IUDsalso known as the coil, are a form of contraception. They prevent pregnancy, but do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. An IUD is inserted into the uterus (womb, green) to stop sperm reaching an ovum (egg) and fertilising it. This is done mechanically by disrupting sperm mobility, and chemically by releasing copper or a hormone called levonorgestrel to act as spermicides. The IUD also prevents a fertilised egg from implanting in the uterine lining. | |
