ATP (adenosine triphosphate) hydrolysis, animation. ATP (top) is a carrier of metabolic energy in cells. The energy is stored in the chemical bonds and released when the molecule is broken down by hydrolysis (the addition of water, H2O). Two products of ATP hydrolysis are shown here. At left, hydrolysis of ATP produces ADP (adenosine diphosphate) and inorganic phosphate. At right, hydrolysis of ATP produces AMP (adenosine monophosphate) and pyrophosphate. | |
