RNA wobble hypothesis, animation. In messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) three bases make up a codon (yellow), which matches to an anticodon (blue), in this case a transfer RNA (tRNA) codon. The two base pairs on the right side have lined up correctly, matching G to C. However the first tRNA base can 'wobble', meaning it can match to any other base. This allows some flexibility of which codons can line up. I (inosine) in the wobble position can match with three different codons, as demonstrated, although they all carry the same amino acid. | |
