Synthesis and degradation of acetylcholine, animation. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter, that is it transmits signals between nerve cells. The first few frames show acetate (blue) and choline (yellow) combining in the synaptic bud to form acetylcholine. This reaction is catalysed by an enzyme called choline acetyltransferase (ChAT, pink). After crossing the presynaptic membrane and binding to a sodium ion channel in the postsynaptic membrane (not shown here), an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase (AChE, red) breaks acetylcholine into its two components, acetate and choline. | |
