Brain pathways, 3D DTI scan

3D diffusion tensor imaging MRI scan of nerve pathways in the brain. The pathways are highlighted in green, overlaid on a black and white 2D MRI scan. The front of the head is at top, with the centre line of the brain down left. Diffusion tensor imaging measures the direction of water diffusion, which in the brain reveals the orientation of nerve fibres. In the first and last parts of this clip, the fibres connecting the two hemispheres are seen (curving from centre to the left edge). In the middle of the clip, the scan slice is nearer the top of the head, and the hemispheres are shown to be unconnected at this level.
