DNA transcription, animation. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is made up of a two chains of many small molecules, known as nucleotides. Two of these strands are twisted around each other to form a double helix. In order to make proteins from the DNA's template the DNA helix is unwound so that one strand can act as a template (yellow strand) for the production of a complimentary RNA (ribonucleic acid) strand (green). In this animation RNA polymerase (blue) adds, step by step, a new ribonucleotide triphosphate at the 3 prime end of the growing RNA strand. The base thymine (T, bottom left) in DNA is substituted with uracil (U, bottom right) in RNA. | |
