DNA transcription, animation. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is made up of a two chains of many small molecules, known as nucleotides. Two of these strands are twisted around each other to form a double helix. In order to make proteins from the DNA's template the DNA helix is unwound so that one strand can act as a template for the production of a complimentary RNA (ribonucleic acid) strand. In this animation RNA polymerase adds, step by step, a new ribonucleotide triphosphate at the 3 prime end of the growing RNA strand (bottom). A phosphodiester bond is formed between this nucleotide and the one belonging to the template strand (top). Hydrogen bonds then link the complementary bases together (white). | |
