| Animation showing the division of a plant cell (cytokinesis), animation. Cytokinesis is the process by which a dividing cell is split into two daughter cells. Plant cells have rigid cell walls, so in order to divide, a new section of cell wall must be built across the cell. The first few frames show the phragmoplast (the collection of spindles running vertically across the cell) delivering vesicles (red) from the golgi apparatus (yellow) to the centre of the cell. These vesicles contain the lipids, proteins and carbohydrates needed for the assembly of a new cell wall. These components are deposited in the centre of the cell where they fuse together and grow outwards. Eventually they reach either side of the cell and the plant cell splits. | |
