Animation showing the process by which salt dissolves in water. Sodium chloride (salt) crystals are held together by attractive forces between the positively charged sodium (yellow) and negatively charged chloride (green) ions of which they consist. When a salt crystal is placed into water the positively charged hydrogen ions (blue) within the water molecules attract the negatively charged chloride ions. Similarly, the negatively charged oxygen ions (red) attract and surround the positively charged sodium ions. The sodium and chloride ions are pulled apart and the crystal dissolves. | |
