Neurotransmitter action and destruction, animation. In the brain nerve cells use an electric membrane potential to pass information on to postsynaptic cells. This action potential reaches the end of the nerve cell and causes the release of a neurotransmitter which works to pass this potential on to the postsynaptic cell. Here, the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (yellow and purple) binds to a membrane receptor (yellow) on the surface of the postsynaptic cell. The receptor then acts as a channel, opening to allow sodium ions (red, round) to cross the membrane. The movement of these ions changes the action potential of the postsynaptic cell. The final frames show acetylcholine being broken down by the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (red, left). | |
