Timelapse of the Aurora Borealis. Also known as the Northern lights, this phenomenon is caused by the collision of high energy particles from the solar wind with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere). The charged particles are directed by the Earth's magnetic field to the polar regions meaning aurorae usually only occur between three to six degrees latitude. The planet Jupiter is seen just above the horizon. The Pleiades star cluster can also be seen. Filmed near Tromso, Norway. | |
