Chromosomal mutations, animation. This is a process which alters the structure of chromosomes. In the nucleus of a cell DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is tightly packaged into thread-like structures called chromosomes. This animation depicts four different types of chromosomal mutation. Firstly, deletion occurs when a part of the chromosome is removed. The second frame shows the process of inversion. A section is broken out of the chromosome and re-inserted at the same site in the opposite direction. During translocation mutations, a section of one chromosome breaks off and becomes attached to another chromosome. The final frame shows a duplication mutation. A section of a chromosome replicates, resulting in a set of genes being repeated. | |
