Isoleucine point mutations, animation. Point mutations are simple mutations in which a sequence of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) has been altered at one position. DNA is made up of a chain of many small molecules, known as nucleotides. During protein formation these nucleotides are read in groups of three called codons. Each codon corresponds to a specific amino acid, which is used by the cell to build a complete protein. The central codon (AUA) codes for the amino acid isoleucine. The nine outer codons are produced when a point mutation occurs. | |
