Intragenic suppression, animation. This is a second mutation in a gene which counteracts the effect of a previous mutation. Messenger RNA (ribonucleic acid, green) is made up of a chain of many small molecules, known as nucleotides. During protein formation (translation) these nucleotides are read in groups of three, called codons. Each codon corresponds to a specific amino acid (blue), which is used by the cell to build a complete protein. The normal process is shown in the upper frame. In the second frame a mutation has changed the codon for an amino acid (AAA) into a stop codon (UAA), which brings the protein formation to an end. In the lowest frame a second mutation changes this codon back to one coding an amino acid (UAU) and protein formation continues. | |
