The rhythmic motion of a millipede's (Narceus americanus) legs can been in this shot recorded on a laboratory light box. The legs move in a sequence of waves, each wave consisting of ten to twelve pairs of legs, and every leg mirroring those on the opposite side of the millipede's body. This species is found in forests throughout the eastern U.S. and southeastern Canada, and reaches lengths of 10 cm and more. These nocturnal arthropods feed mostly on decomposing vegetation. Contrary to their name, no millipede species has a thousand legs; most have fewer than a hundred. | |
