Tarantula (Aphonopelma sp.) making its way across forest floor, dragging silk behind it. Hunting spiders like tarantulas don't build webs but will use silk to capture prey, sometimes settings traps as this one could be doing. Members of this genus have legspans ranging from 12-16cm. They are found throughout the southwestern US, parts of Mexico and Central America inhabiting forests, scrublands and deserts. It is the most common tarantula genus found in the American Southwest and includes the Western desert tarantula, the Arizona blond tarantula and Mexican blond tarantula. | |
