This newly emerged adult honeybee (Apis mellifera) with deformed wings is afflicted with American Foulbrood (AFB), a disease caused by the ingestion of spore-forming bacteria. This bee is remarkable in that is has survived to adulthood, but it is incapable of working or feeding itself and will soon die. AFB was responsible for large colony losses in the past, but its incidence has been reduced through the use of antibiotics. | |
