Light microscopy of Actinosphaerium, a 'sun animalcule', feeding in fresh water. Actinosphaerium is a heliozoan protozoan with radiating pseudopodia called axopodia, which resemble spines. The axopodia are used for locomotion and prey capture. Tiny protozoa are seen stuck to some of the spines. This specimen is some 500 micrometres in diameter. Recorded under Nomarski differential interference contrast illumination. | |
