Giant drummer cockroaches (Blaberus giganteus), grooming its mouthparts and legs as it warms itself in the sun. Grooming is a frequent behavior of insects and is important for keeping these organisms clean and free of bacteria and parasites. With a length approaching 10 cm, the giant drummer is the world's largest cockroach. It is found in tropical areas of Central and northern South America as well as the West Indies, and prefers living in dark and damp caves. Its diet includes rotting wood, fruit, dead insects, and decaying matter. | |
