Close-up of a bed bug (Cimex lectularius) feeding on human blood. Bed bugs feed through their sharp mouthparts, called a stylet, which they inject into the skin. The bed bug's saliva includes an anaesthetic, which numbs the pain of its bite. After the bite, the region may become intensely itchy, and a rash may develop. Bed bugs have been notorious pests throughout history, but their populations declined sharply in the mid-20th century. However they are making a comeback in many cities throughout the world. | |
