Discovery of the tau neutrino

| Animated particle tracks showing the event in which the tau neutrino was discovered. This occurred in 2000 in the DONUT experiment at Fermilab, which was established to detect the tau neutrino. In this event, the tau neutrino is betrayed by its decay particles. The tau neutrino entered unseen from the left and interacted to produce several charged particles (coloured tracks). The red track is a tau particle, which soon decays to another particle (green), showing a characteristic kink in the track. DONUT comprised a series of iron plates (grey) separated by layers of emulsion in which tracks were produced. It is thought that only one in a billion neutrinos fired at the iron produced an interaction. This discovery of the tau neutrino confirmed the Standard Model's grouping of leptons into three generations; the electron, muon and tau, each with an associated neutrino. | |
