Timelapse footage showing water uptake in a white flower in water containing red dye. The water has been dyed red in order to show its movement. Water is transported upwards through the xylem vessels, from the stem to the leaves and petals. The main driving force for this water movement is transpiration, the evaporation of water from the leaves and petals. The evaporation causes more water to be drawn up from the glass through capillary action. In this demonstration, this is seen as the petals gradually turn pink, and their main veins become visible as red streaks over time. | |
