Sample of the element silicon (Si) rotating. Silicon has the atomic number 14, and is a strong, brittle metalloid. It is the second most common element in the Earth's crust (after oxygen), with around 90% of the crust being composed of silicate minerals. Due to this abundance these minerals are widely used on construction. Pure silicon is used in the refining of steel and in other industrial processes, and its purest form is the basis for integrated circuits, which are ubiquitous in electronic products. | |
