Black hole accretion. Animation of accretion of gas from a star to a black hole, in an X-ray binary system. The start of the animation shows the star at right and the black hole (with jets) at left, with gas being drawn from the star into the black hole's accretion disc. The animation follows material that formed an X-ray 'hot spot' in the accretion disc. The hot spot rotates rapidly and the X-ray emissions increase in frequency, as it gets closer to the black hole. Finally, the material is ejected as superfast 'bullets' impacting the jets. This animation is based on observations of the H1743-322 system, located 28, 000 light years from Earth in the constellation of Scorpius. The observations were made on 3 June 2009 with NASA's Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite and the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) radio telescope. | |
