Vorticella protozoan feeding. Light microscopy footage in water of the feeding and coiling action of a Vorticella protozoan. This freshwater organism consists of a bell-shaped head and a stalk that here is anchored to a much larger filamentous green algae structure (green, across top). The cilia (tiny hair-like structures) attached to the bell-like head are used to capture food and also for movement. The stalk contains a contractile fibril called a myoneme. This can contract, pulling the head back to the anchor point. This contraction occurs several times in this footage. | |
