Rotifer feeding. Light microscopy footage of a rotifer (a microscopic aquatic organism) moving through water as it feeds. It is anchored in place by its foot (at lower left at the start of the footage). It feeds by beating the cilia that line its corona (initially at upper right). These cilia are used to draw in bacteria and algae cells. During the clip, the rotifer moves through the water, re-anchoring itself several times. The colours seen here are not natural, but are the result of the use of differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy techniques. | |
