Higgs boson event in a proton-proton collision, as detected by the CMS detector in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The protons (blue dots) approach each other at nearly the speed of light, and collide to produce a shower of other particles. Most importantly, there are two high-energy photons (orange lines and towers) produced. Although they could have been generated from background events, these photons were predicted to be observed from the decay of a Higgs boson generated in the collision, so may provide evidence that the standard model including the Higgs field is accurate. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is one of the experiments involved in the hunt for the Higgs boson, the particle hypothesised to give other particles mass. | |
