Euglena, diatom and algae. At centre is the flagellate protozoan Euglena, a unicellular freshwater organism. The pink structure within the cell is a sensory organ known as the eyespot, or stigma, that is able to perceive the intensity of light. The green structures within the cell are chloroplasts, the site of photosynthesis. At top is a diatom, a photosynthetic single-celled alga. The characteristic feature of diatoms is their intricately patterned glass-like cell wall, or frustule. The frustule often has rows of tiny holes, known as striae. The round cells are Chlamydomonas sp. green algae, which is also a unicellualr freshwater organism. | |
