Hurricane Irene's path from the Caribbean to the east coast of the USA, from 21st to 29th August 2011. Over this time, Irene passed Hispaniola and hit the Bahamas (surrounded by light blue water) as a category 3 hurricane, causing extensive damage. It made landfall in North Carolina on August 27th, then moved back over the ocean, and followed the coast northwards, making landfall twice more; in New Jersey (28th August) and later that day at Coney Island in New York. By the third landfall, it had been downgraded to a tropical storm. Irene caused extensive flooding and wind damage throughout its path, causing more than 40 deaths and an estimated $10 billion worth of damage. These images were taken by the GOES-13 satellite. | |
