Laparoscopic bowel cancer surgery. Clip 9 of 39. Footage of surgeons carrying out a laparoscopic procedure on a 65-year-old woman with a malignant bowel tumour. Endoscopic tubes, cameras and surgical devices have been inserted through keyhole ports in her abdomen (lower right) and are being moved around as the surgeons examine the patient's bowels on the views relayed back to the screens (upper left and upper right). Here, a scissor tool is being used and other tools used to move organs around. This procedure was later converted into an open operation where the surgeons removed (debulked) most of the tumour. It was a primary cancer that had already spread elsewhere in the patient's body, but the procedure was still performed in order to provide relief (palliation) from symptoms. Bowel cancer (also called colon cancer or colorectal cancer) affects the lining of the large intestine. It is one of the most common cancers in the developed world.
