Bowel cancer surgery. Clip 22 of 39. Footage of surgeons carrying out open surgery to remove a malignant bowel tumour from the intestines of a 65-year-old woman. Here, they are using a cautery tool to burn through tissue as they isolate the tumour. For the actual tumour removal, see clip K002/9648. The operation started out as a laparoscopic procedure, but was converted to open surgery. The surgeons removed (debulked) most of the tumour. It was a primary cancer that had already spread elsewhere in the patient's body, but the procedure was still performed in order to provide relief (palliation) from symptoms. Bowel cancer (also called colon cancer or colorectal cancer) affects the lining of the large intestine. It is one of the most common cancers in the developed world. For the entire sequence, see clips K002/9677 to K002/9639. | |
