A beta particle is a high-energy electron. In the process of emitting an electron, one neutron (yellow) in the nucleus is converted into a proton (red). This raises the atomic number of the nucleus. At a more fundamental level, this occurs as one down quark in a neutron changes to an up quark, which changes the neutron to a proton and releases a W- boson. This boson decays rapidly into the electron and electron antineutrino. Carbon-14 has a half-life of 5730 years, and its concentration in organic matter is used in the technique of carbon dating. | |
