Migration of keratinocytes, timelapse light microscopy. Keratinocytes are skin cells found in the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. Keratinocytes produce the hard protein keratin and then die, forming a tough dead layer that protects the living skin beneath. This layer is sloughed off continuously and replaced by living cells from beneath. Keratinocyte also migrate across wounds during the process of healing. | |
