Angiography video of abnormal blood flow through right renal artery of a 48-year-old patient with hypertension (high blood pressure) showing renal artery stenosis (narrowing). Angioplasty is the widening of an artery that has become narrowed through disease. This typically occurs due to a build-up of atheroma, a cholesterol-rich plaque, on the inside wall of the artery. This is common in patients with high blood pressure. During the procedure, a balloon is introduced into the narrowed part of the artery and then inflated, which forces open the artery, permitting normal blood flow. Angiography is an imaging technique in which a radio-opaque contrast medium is injected into blood vessels to allow them to be seen on an X-ray. | |
