Angiography video of the upper leg of a 73-year-old patient, showing narrowing (stenosis) of the femoral artery at upper left. This patient had high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels, which often leads to the build-up of plaques of atheroma on the inner walls of arteries, reducing blood flow. In this case, blood flow to the knee resumed below the blockages due to the vasculature around the femoral artery. Treatment for stenosis is angioplasty, the physical widening of the artery by inflating a balloon within it. Angiography is an imaging technique in which a radio-opaque contrast medium is injected into blood vessels to allow them to be seen on an X-ray. | |
