Light wave. Animation of the structure of a light wave. Light is an electromagnetic wave, that has two components: an electric component (blue) and a magnetic component (red) oriented at right angles to one another, perpendicular to the direction of travel. The distance between two peaks of the wave is called the wavelength, and the height of each peak is called the amplitude. Wavelength is inversely related to frequency: the longer the wavelength, the shorter (higher) the frequency, that is, the more peaks arrive in a given time. Higher frequency waves carry more energy. In visible light, violet has the highest energy and the shortest wavelength, while red has the longest wavelength and lower energy. | |
