Electrical conductor. Animation of an experiment showing the electrons flowing in an electrical conductor. A piece of conducting material, such as a metal, is held between crocodile clips. The camera zooms into the material to shows its atoms (grey) and electrons (blue). In a metal, electrons exist as a sea"" around the atoms, and are free to move. When a voltage is applied across the material by the battery, the negatively-charged electrons are free to flow towards the positive pole. The movement of electrons through a material is an electric current, and the current causes the light bulb in the circuit to glow. See clip K002/8536 for the same circuit incorporating an insulating material." | |
