Electrical conductor. Animation of an experiment showing the electrons in an electrical insulator. A piece of insulating material, such as a plastic, is held between crocodile clips. The camera zooms into the material to shows its atoms (grey) and electrons (blue). In an insulator, electrons are bound to their atoms, and are not free to move between them. An applied voltage from the battery makes no difference, and there is no flow of electrons to form a current, so the bulb remains unlit. See clip K002/8537 for the same circuit incorporating an conducting material. | |
