Astronomical CCD. Analogy showing how light is collected on a CCD (change-coupled device). This is an optical astronomy device that comprises an integrated circuit (silicon chip) that contains numerous light-sensitive elements called pixels. A telescope's image is focused onto the CCD, and the light prompts the build up of an electrical charge in each pixel. This is proportional to the brightness of the light falling on it, allowing a detailed image to be obtained. | |
