Comparison of scanning electron micrographs (SEMs) of feathers from a swallow (Hirundo rustica) and then a tawny owl (Strix aluco). Owls have the benefit of silent flight, due to the muffling effect of the filamentous extensions of the anterior barbules on their flight feathers. Most other birds, including other birds of prey, do not have this feather structure. This gives the owl an advantage when swooping on its unsuspecting prey. | |
