Zoom to a redshift 7 galaxy beyond a massive cluster of galaxies, showing how its light is distorted. Redshift is a measure of how much the wavelengths of light are shifted to longer wavelengths. The greater the shift in wavelength toward the redder regions of the spectrum, the more distant the object is. This sequence shows how the light from the galaxy is bent by the massive cluster of galaxies Abell 2218 (yellow galaxies). The cluster causes more than one image of the galaxy to be seen from Earth, a phenonemon called gravitational lensing. |
