Zoom in to the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), which lies some 2.5 million light years from Earth in the constellation Andromeda. This is the largest nearby galaxy, and the largest galaxy in the Local Group of galaxies to which our Milky Way belongs. The main disc of stars is around 120, 000 light years in diameter, but the disc extends twice as far more tenuously. By comparison, the Milky Way is around 100, 000 light years across. The galaxy is estimated to contain one trillion stars, compared to the Milky Way's 200 million, although it contains less dark matter, and may even be lighter than the Milky Way. Velocity measurements imply that Andromeda and the Milky Way will collide in a few billion years.<br>Restrictions: |
