Alternating visible and infrared views of Sculptor Galaxy (NGC 253). Although the visible light view provides a stunning view of stars, nebulae and dust lanes, it cannot show what lies within or beyond the dust, as it is opaque to visible light. Dust is nearly transparent at IR wavelengths, which permits study of the dust and stars within and beyond it. This galaxy has numerous starbirth regions, leading to its classifcation as a starburst galaxy. It lies around eleven million light years from Earth in the constellation Sculptor.<br>Restrictions: |
