Animation of a flight through the young star cluster Westerlund 1, ending with a close view of the magnetar CXO J164710.2-455216, which lies within it. A magnetar is a neutron star with an incredibly strong magnetic field. The decay of the field powers the emission of X-rays and gamma rays. Magnetars are thought to be formed in some supernova explosions, and are the most magnetic objects known. Westerlund 1 is a large galactic cluster containing hundreds of very massive stars, some shining with a brilliance of almost one million Suns. It is a young cluster, thought to be around 4-5 million years old. It lies around 15, 000 light years from Earth in the constellation Ara. This distance and direction places it near the edge of the Milky Way's central bar of stars.<br>Restrictions: |
