Zoom into the galaxy cluster Abell 370. This is a cluster of hundreds of galaxies, which also shows the effects of gravitational lensing. This is seen as the blue arcs between the orange galaxies. Gravitational lensing occurs when a dense foreground object, such as this cluster, bends the light of more distance objects around it, distorting and focussing the light like a lens. The blue arcs here are far more distant galaxies, distorted and magnified. Abell 370 is a distant cluster, lying some six billion light years from Earth in the constellation Cetus. The background galaxies forming the arcs are thought to be at least twice the distance away, making them some of the most distant, and thus oldest, objects known.<br>Restrictions: |
