Zoom into the galaxy cluster CL 2244-02, showing the effects of gravitational lensing. This is best seen as the blue arc at upper centre. Gravitational lensing occurs when a dense foreground object, such as this cluster, bends the light of a more distance object around it, distorting and focussing the light like a lens. The blue arc here is a far more distant galaxy, distorted and magnified. CL 2244-02 is part of a larger cluster of hundreds of galaxies called Abell 370. This is a distant cluster, lying some six billion light years from Earth in the constellation Cetus. The background galaxy forming the arc is thought to be at least twice the distance away, making it one of the most distant, and thus oldest, objects known.<br>Restrictions: |
