Zoom into the interacting galaxies NGC 6872 and IC 4970. NGC 6872 is an elongated barred spiral galaxy that has had a recent encounter with the smaller IC 4970 (above it). The interaction is deforming the upper spiral arm of the larger galaxy, and has caused a burst of starbirth, as seen by the blue patches in the arm and the blue bridge of hot young stars extending between the two. The galaxies lie some 300 million light years from Earth in the constellation Pavo.<br>Restrictions:
